U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement in response to today's sentencing of former Liberian leader Charles Taylor to 50 years in prison. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"Charles Taylor is responsible for aiding and abetting some of the most heinous atrocities including rape, murder, slavery, mass amputations, and the use of child soldiers. He deserves to spend the rest of his life in jail.

"This sentence sends a clear message to the leaders of other repressive regimes that they will be held accountable for their actions."
