Congressman Owens Votes to Repeal Tax on Medical Devic

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Bill Owens voted today in favor of H.R. 436, legislation that would repeal a 2.3% excise tax on medical devices. The Protect Medical Innovation Act of 2011 passed the U.S. House of Representatives with Owens' support by a vote of 270-146. Owens cosponsored H.R. 436 after first being approached at a town hall by a constituent in Plattsburgh who serves as the controller of a medical device manufacturer in Clinton County.

"After considering both sides of the issue and gathering information from a medical device manufacturer who was concerned that an excise tax may have a disproportionate impact on his business, I decided there are better ways to pay for expanding health coverage," said Owens. "This is another opportunity for both parties in Washington to put politics aside and work together for the good of the country."

Owens also cosponsored a separate bill that would repeal the same device tax, but pay for the loss in revenue by eliminating subsidies for oil and gas companies.
