Gov. Signs Bill Outlawing Synthetic Cocaine

Press Release

Location: Juneau, AK

Governor Sean Parnell today signed legislation classifying certain synthetic cathinones, commonly known as synthetic cocaine and marketed as bath salts, as a Schedule IIA controlled substance. The use of synthetic cocaine can impair perception, reduce motor control, and cause extreme paranoia and violent episodes.

"Many thanks to Senator Kevin Meyer and Representative Bill Stoltze for sponsoring this legislation that will strengthen the laws relating to this dangerous substance," Governor Parnell said. "This legislation recognizes the significant threat these substances pose to the health and safety of Alaskans and their communities."

Senate Bill 140 classifies bath salts as a Schedule IIA controlled substance. It will be illegal to possess, manufacture, sell, or distribute the substance. The penalties will be the same as other Schedule IIA substances, such as methamphetamine, cocaine, and LSD.
