Langevin Statement on RI Receiving No Child Left Behind Waiver

Location: Unknown

Congressman Jim Langevin issued the following statement in reaction to today's news that Rhode Island was one of eight states to receive flexibility from key provisions of No Child Left Behind in exchange for state-developed plans to: prepare all students for college and career, focus aid on the neediest students, and support effective teaching and leadership.

"I want to congratulate Commissioner Gist and everyone at the Department of Education who worked hard to develop a plan to ensure all of our students have a fair opportunity to succeed," said Langevin. "While I will continue to press for Congress to retool and strengthen the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, I am proud that our state has taken a proactive approach to make improvements. Recognizing that our skills gap is one of the most significant barriers to our future economic growth, I'm pleased that the State is continuing to move toward an education system that ensures all our students are both college and career ready."
