A Summit County organization will receive new resources to assess brownfield sites and protect the health of Ohioans. U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that $600,000 has been awarded to the Northeast Ohio Four County Regional Planning and Development Organization (NEFCO), based in Akron, by the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Brownfields Assessment, Cleanup, and Revolving Loan Fund Grants.

"Ohio's brownfield sites can be opportunities for redevelopment and new growth," Brown said. "These funds will help support cleanup and decontamination efforts critical for the safety and economic success of communities across the state."

According to the EPA, the agency has selected NEFCO for a brownfields assessment coalition grant. Grant funds also will be used for community outreach activities. The EPA states that recipients of assessment grants can use the funds to inventory, characterize, assess, conduct planning and community involvement related to brownfield sites.
