Sen. Carper Statement on May Jobs Report

Today, U.S. Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) issued the following statement after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 69,000 jobs in May:

"While today's jobs numbers are deeply disappointing, particularly after encouraging numbers this winter and spring, our economy has produced 27 consecutive months of private sector job growth. Additionally, our manufacturing sector continues to create more jobs than any time since the mid-1990s. That said, today's report illustrates that our economy still has a long way to go, with many of our friends and neighbors out of work, and many businesses riddled with uncertainty.

"Congress and the Administration must continue to build on the bipartisan momentum that we've seen over the past several months and ensure that we avoid measures that could harm the recovery. A top priority for the U.S. House of Representatives should be to follow the lead of the Senate and pass a bill to reform the U.S. Postal Service that will help return the American institution to solvency and protect a mailing industry that employs over 8 million people. After that, Congress has a lengthy to-do list, including eliminating agricultural trade barriers, convincing the House to pass the Senate's bipartisan transportation bill to preserve 2 million construction jobs, and passing a long-term deficit reduction plan to restore confidence in the markets that Washington is capable of solving problems. I look forward to tackling these challenges in the coming weeks and continuing my efforts to create a more nurturing environment for job creation and job preservation in Delaware and across the country."
