During my time in the Air Force and in the CIA, Memorial Day became a deeply instilled reminder that not all service members are able to return home and enjoy the freedoms that they have helped preserve.
My father courageously fought in and survived the Allied assault on D-Day. I have always been so proud of what my father and his friends did to protect our liberty.
Memorial Day Weekend is a holiday weekend for most Texans, but I hope you will join me in taking time to honor the sacrifices of brave men and women who gave all to protect our country, and please join with me in offering a prayer for the family members of our service members still serving in harm's way protecting our nation and her values.
And I hope you will help strengthen the institutions they have fought for by exercising your right--and performing your civic duty--to vote. Election Day is Tuesday, May 29th.
During these tough national times, we cannot afford to take for granted the rights that so many have died for.
