The Hill - Hensarling: Obama Wouldn't Know a Jobs Bill 'If He Tripped over it'

News Article

Location: Unknown

House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (Texas) criticized President Obama on Tuesday night for saying House Republicans are holding back job creation, and said Obama and Senate Democrats are the ones refusing to take up dozens of House-passed bills that would spur job creation.

"With all due respect to the president, I don't think he'd know a jobs bill if he tripped over it," Hensarling said on Fox News, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.

"I don't think there is a president in living memory who has less credibility on the topic of jobs and the economy than Barack Obama," Hensarling said. "He told the American people if we passed his stimulus plan, unemployment would never go beyond 8 percent, and in fact, it would be 6 percent now. And as you well know, we've had 38 straight months of 8 percent-plus unemployment, the worst record since the Great Depression."

He also said Obama promised job creation as the result of passing the Dodd-Frank financial reform bill and the healthcare law, but that jobs failed to materialize. Worse, he said, is evidence that jobs are hurt by these laws.

"We were told if we passed his healthcare plan that it would help the economy," Hensarling said. "We now know the Congressional Budget Office says it'll cost us almost a million jobs; frankly, private economists put the number much higher."

He also reiterated Republican arguments that with no economic record to run on, Obama is resorting to class warfare, something other Republicans have said can be seen in Democratic calls for higher taxes on the wealthy.

"This is a president who, because he can't run on his record on jobs and the economy, frankly, usually tries to engage in the politics of division and envy," he said.
