Today, Congressman Joe Pitts (R-PA) announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency will contribute funds to repair the Speedwell Forge Lake dam spillway damaged in last year's floods. Because of the injury to the dam, the lake was drained in October 2011.
The commitment of over $900,000 will cover 75 percent of the repairs to the dam's emergency spillway, which had heaved and cracked as a result of increased pressure from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Repairs will be managed by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
Rep. Pitts' statement follows:
"I'm very glad to announce that the Speedwell Forge Lake has qualified for federal assistance. Last year's devastating floods left a muddy hole in place of a lake that had been enjoyed by anglers and boaters for decades. While this money won't cover the full costs to bring the lake up to code, it is a significant commitment that will contribute to the repairs."
