Barrow Asks Google to Respond to Latest News in Street View Case

Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) sent a letter today to Google CEO Larry Page asking that the company provide Congress and the American public with a full account of the Google Street View program.

"While I credit Google's commitment to innovation and making the consumer's online experience more enriching, I have serious concerns with some of the tactics used," wrote Barrow. "Companies like yours -- which are entrusted with very sensitive online data about our private lives -- have a responsibility to honor the public's trust by being transparent with consumers and forthcoming with investigators when addressing privacy breach inquiries."

This letter follows a wave of consumer complaints stemming from Google's 2010 admission that their Street View cars collected personal data that was being sent and received on home Wi-Fi networks. Congressman Barrow serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and is also a member of the Bipartisan Privacy Caucus, a bipartisan group of members of Congress dedicated to protecting citizens' confidential information in the face of new challenges posed by the information age.
