Press Release

Date: May 31, 2012
Location: Omaha, NE
Issues: Elections

Former United States Senator Bob Kerrey accepted two candidate forums this week, while repeating his call for seven debates in the general election.

Kerrey will take part in an ethanol forum on August 10th sponsored by the Nebraska Ethanol Producers and the American Coalition for Ethanol. He has also accepted an invitation to a health care forum in early October sponsored by Creighton University.

"I continue to believe these debates and forums are an extremely important avenue for candidates to communicate how they would tackle the real issues facing our state and nation," Kerrey said. "Nebraskans deserve the opportunity to see the candidates side by side and determine who would best serve them. I encourage State Senator Deb Fischer to accept my proposal for seven debates for the general election."

Kerrey's proposal for seven debates includes three in the Lincoln-Douglas style. Kerrey previously accepted debates hosted by the Nebraska State Fair and the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce.

State Senator Fischer remains silent on debates, despite calling for "as many debates as possible" during the Republican primary.

A recent column by Ed Howard speculates on Fischer's dodge.

"At this stage, it seems Fischer's camp might content itself with letting endless advertising dollars do most of the talking, and Kerrey bashing."

For his part, Kerrey said he looks forward to speaking to the hundreds of Nebraska youth who will be assembled Tuesday at the American Legion Cornhusker Boys and Girls State.
Kerrey is scheduled to speak at 7:45. The event will take place at Kimball Hall on the University of Nebraska -- Lincoln campus. The event is open to the press.
