Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-R) issued the following statement regarding the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (PRENDA). The House did not reach the required two thirds majority needed to pass a bill under suspension rules as the final vote tally was 246 to 148.
The bill prohibits the abortion of an unborn child due to his/her gender. PRENDA also prohibits the transportation of a woman into the country for the purposes of obtaining a sex-selection abortion.
Said Ros-Lehtinen, "I am pleased that the House sent a clear message that we will protect the dignity of the unborn. It is abhorrent and barbaric to think that children are aborted simply because of their gender.
Even though we did not reach the required two thirds majority for the House to approve this legislation, it is important that we be on record against such a despicable act. I look forward to continuing to work with my congressional colleagues in order to safeguard the rights and dignity of the unborn."
