Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-25), Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and United States Congressional Representative to the United Nations released the following statement regarding the announcement that Chinese human rights advocate, Chen Guangcheng, has left China for the United States.
"I am pleased that Chen Guangcheng, his wife, and their two children have left China for freedom in the United States.
"Mr. Chen's journey to the U.S. marks the end of a long and painful ordeal at the hands of the Chinese government. I commend Mr. Chen for his courage to speak publicly about the human rights abuse going on in China. While I remain concerned about additional relatives and fellow human rights activists back in China, Mr. Chen's safe arrival in the United States is a victory for human rights.
"While I am pleased that Mr. Chen and his family are safe, we must remain vigilant. The United States cannot stand by while other nations continue to commit human rights violations."
