Dr. Benishek: "Defense Authorization Important For America's Security"

Press Release

Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) today released the following statement after voting to support the "National Defense Authorization Act of 2013" (H.R. 4310):

"This vote reflects my belief that we need to do everything we can to support our nation's heroes -- those who defend our freedoms and keep us safe. I am encouraged that this bill does just that and brings us one step closer to restoring fiscal sanity to the defense budget.

I was disappointed this bill continues to fund the ongoing War in Afghanistan. As I've stated publicly before, I believe we need to begin winding down the decade long conflict and bring our troops home. Many people in Northern Michigan have grown tired of this endless war and want it to end soon.

I read every single page of this bill -- 995 pages -- and consulted with many people to ensure that U.S. citizens would not be denied their constitutional rights. I'm satisfied that nothing in this legislation can be construed to deny a U.S. citizen the right to habeas corpus, or his/her constitutional rights in a civilian court, including the right to a trial by jury.

There are many people in the world wishing to do harm to U.S. citizens here at home. It is important that we continue to support efforts to keep our great nation protected. It's fitting that this bill passed the House during the month of May -- Military Appreciation Month. We owe a debt of gratitude to all who have served, particularly those who have made the ultimate sacrifice."
