Social Security has helped Americans retire with dignity for over seventy years. We must ensure that successful program is preserved and strengthened for the hardworking people that paid into the system. That's why I've supported legislation to change the formula for determining the yearly Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), so seniors are fairly compensated for the rising costs of healthcare and other expenses.

At the same time, it is imperative that as the population of older Americans grows, we find new and innovative ways to extend the solvency of this critical safety net. I believe solving this problem starts with getting national deficits in line, so Congress can stop the practice of borrowing from the trust fund to subsidize other government programs. We must also focus on job growth to increase contributions to the trust fund. I am opposed to privatizing the system or reducing benefits for current beneficiaries in any way, but I am committed to working across the aisle and finding solutions that benefit all Americans, young and old.
