Roskam Statement on Sequester Replacement Act

Statement

Chief Deputy Whip Peter Roskam (IL-06), issued the following statement today after the House passed H.R. 4966, the Sequester Replacement Act:

"We must be honest with the American people about the challenges before us, and get down to real solutions. The sequester would have devastating consequences for our military men and women as well as the readiness of our Armed Forces. Republicans and Democrats both agree that the sequester is bad policy and must be replaced.

"So today, House Republicans passed a common-sense plan that reforms federal programs and roots out waste and fraud. Many of these measures are no brainers--like ensuring food stamps go to those Americans most in need, asking federal workers to contribute more to their retirement fund like their private sector counterparts, and stopping the unending cycle of bailouts for "too-big-to-fail' institutions.

"What is crucial is that we are not only addressing the immediate threat of the sequester, but also the massive debt that is stifling economic growth over the long term. Here in the House, we are working to ensure a leaner, more effective federal government that stops spending money we don't have."
