Rep. Graves Votes to Fund Troops, Protect Civil Liberties

Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA-09) released the following statement today after voting in favor of HR 4310, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 (NDAA). The bill, which authorizes $643 billion for the Defense Department, will fund the training, equipment, and leadership needed for America's men and women in uniform. Rep. Graves also voted in favor of the Gohmert/Landry amendment clarifying that a President, any government official, or the Judiciary cannot unlawfully detain an American citizen or lawful resident indefinitely or without a trial. This amendment narrowed the detainee language in the FY2012 NDAA to ensure each American's constitutional rights are upheld.

"While we must continue to wage a vigorous war against terrorism, it can't be at the expense of the civil liberties and rights of American citizens. The President of the United States should not have the unprecedented right to hold any American against his or her will indefinitely. I will always vote on the side of protecting constitutional principles and civil liberties. Unfortunately, last year's NDAA did not sufficiently protect the rights of Americans, so I had to vote against it. But over the last couple of months, we've worked to resolve this issue, and by adding the Gohmert/Landry Amendment today, we ensure the civil liberties of all American citizens are protected."
