Sutton Votes to Protect Women's Health, Seniors, and Consumer Protections

Today, Congresswoman Betty Sutton (OH-13) voted against a GOP plan to protect tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and companies that ship jobs overseas at the expense of critical programs to protect women's health, assist seniors, and protect middle class families against predatory financial institutions.

"This bill shows that the extreme Republicans in the House will go to any length to protect unnecessary tax breaks for millionaires and companies that ship American jobs overseas, even if it means denying hundreds of thousands of women access to cancer screenings and weakening consumer protections for working families," said Sutton. "I have consistently voted to address our nation's deficit, and will continue to do so in a way that does not put the burden solely on the backs of working Ohioans."

The Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act of 2012, H.R. 5652, would replace $78 billion in savings from the Budget Control Act with deep cuts to programs such as SNAP and "Meals on Wheels', while doing nothing to create jobs and economic opportunities for Ohio families.

In addition to voting against this harmful bill, Sutton voted for Democratic offered Motion to Recommit, which would prevent former Members of Congress who become registered lobbyists making more than $1 million to receive retirement benefits under the Civil Service Retirement System or Federal Employees Retirement System. It would also force Members of Congress to pay more into their retirement plan and prohibit Members from making contributions to retirement benefits with accrued or accumulated leave.
