Sutton Calls on Congress to "Buy American' in Transportation Bill

Press Release

Date: May 17, 2012
Issues: Transportation

Today, Congresswoman Betty Sutton (OH-13) asked a bicameral Congressional conference committee currently negotiating a longer-term transportation bill to include critical "Buy American' language to support American manufacturers and workers.

"American tax dollars spent on our transportation and infrastructure should be invested directly back into American jobs and workers," said Sutton. "We have the best workers and the best manufacturers in the world; what we don't have is laws that fully support them. I call on the transportation conference committee to strengthen our "Buy American' laws to help create jobs here at home."

Sutton spoke on the House Floor in favor of a Motion to Instruct Conferees on H.R. 4348, which calls on conferees negotiating the Congressional Transportation Bill to include language that strengthens "Buy American' provisions through means such as making the waiver process more transparent and closing unnecessary loopholes.

A champion for American manufacturing and a leader on job creation, Congresswoman Sutton has a strong record advocating on behalf of American manufacturers and workers. A member of the House Trade Working Group and the House Manufacturing Caucus, Sutton has led the charge to fight for fairer trade and increased investment in infrastructure projects, introducing legislation that has helped to save the automobile industry in Northeast Ohio.
