Lance Votes to Reaffirm U.S. Policy Against a Nuclear Iran

Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-07) today voted for H. Res. 568, a House resolution stating that it is U.S. policy to prevent Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability and that containment is not an option.

The bill won House approval 401-11.

"This bill reaffirms that for the safety and security of the American and Israeli people Iran must not be allowed to achieve nuclear weapons capability and simple containment as some have suggested should not be an option," said Lance. "Just this week there were reports of advancements in Iran's nuclear weapons program and Hezbollah announced it can launch missile strikes anywhere in Israel. Yet, a tough Iran sanction bill that won overwhelming approval by U.S. House in December 2011 languishes in the U.S. Senate and meanwhile U.S. and Western diplomats continue with concessions to Iran. I call on President Obama to step up the pressure on Iran."

For his part, Lance has long called for tougher financial sanctions against Iran including those targeting Iran's Central Bank and foreign entities that assist Iran in the development of their nuclear weapons program.

In the U.S. House, Lance also serves as a co-chairman of the House Republican Israel Caucus.

NOTE: H.R. 1905, the Iran Threat Reduction Act, was approved by the House in December 2011 by a vote of 410-11. The bill strengthens, updates, and replaces previous Iran sanctions laws to ensure that current law vigorously addresses the multiple threats posed by Iran. The bill closes loopholes in energy and financial sanctions, including by targeting the Central Bank of Iran. The bill also targets the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and senior Iranian regime officials. Presently the bill awaits action in the U.S. Senate.
