Representative Steve Southerland, II today participated in the first conference committee meeting between House and Senate negotiators over the 2012 Surface Transportation Extension Act.
"I am pleased to have this opportunity to fight for Florida's economic and transportation needs from the ground level," said Southerland. "Although this marks just the first day of what will be a lengthy and detailed conference committee process, I look forward to fighting over the coming weeks for a fiscally responsible transportation plan. We need a blueprint that streamlines the duplicative and costly federal overregulation that kills jobs and costs hardworking Americans their taxpayer dollars. I also remain committed to advancing key priorities for the Gulf region, including continued construction of the job-creating Keystone XL pipeline and bolstering the RESTORE Act, which will help with the recovery of the Gulf Coast communities that were hardest hit by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill."
Southerland is one of only seven House Republican freshmen appointed to the 47-member conference committee, as well as the only representative from Florida's Gulf Coast.
