Ron Barber for Congress Releases New Campaign Ad: "Worry"

Press Release

Location: Tucson, AZ

Ron Barber for Congress released a new ad for the special election today, a thirty-second spot called "Worry." The ad shows Jesse Kelly, in his own words, talking about his plans to eliminate and privatize Social Security and Medicare.

"I am running for Congress because our seniors deserve someone who will fight for them," Barber said. "Unfortunately, Jesse Kelly has said time and again that he would "phase out,' "eliminate,' or "privatize' Medicare and Social Security."

In the ad, Jesse Kelly says, "Social Security and Medicare. It's the biggest Ponzi Scheme in history," and that "privatization--it is the only solution." Also cited in the ad are Kelly's responses to various interview questions where he expressed his desire to eliminate Medicare and Social Security.

Barber has made his pledge to protect Medicare and Social Security a cornerstone of his campaign:

On March 20, 2012, Barber announced his promise to protect Medicare in four specific ways: he will not support massive cuts in Medicare benefits, making Medicare a voluntary program, turning Medicare into a program that requires seniors to buy private insurance or forcing seniors to bear the burden of fixing the deficit.

On March 29, 2012, Barber called on Congress to vote "No" on the Republican budget plan that the non-partisan AARP has said will "jeopardize the health and economic security of older Americans.'

On April 15, 2012, Barber wrote on op-ed for the Green Valley News outlining his commitment to protect Medicare.

On May 7, 2012, Barber was joined by over 150 seniors as he received the endorsement of the non-partisan National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.

Ron Barber is a Democrat running for Congress in the special election for Arizona's 8th district. He has lived and worked in Southern Arizona for fifty years, having directed Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' district offices, run the Arizona Division of Developmental Disabilities and owned and operated a family business for 22 years with his wife Nancy. Barber is running to protect the middle class at a time when families have seen their standards of living decline. Barber has made specific pledges to protect Medicare, Social Security and veterans' benefits, and promised to support members of the military and their families.
