Scott Opposes Republican Budget Reconciliation Bill

Statement

Today, the House of Representatives considered H.R. 5652, the Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act of 2012, which replaces sequestration (automatic across the board spending cuts) for 2013. Sequestration was authorized by the Budget Control Act of 2011 and was triggered last November when the so-called Super Committee failed to report a plan to reduce the deficit by $1.2 trillion over the next decade. Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott issued the following statement in opposition to the legislation:

"Balancing the budget requires making tough choices. The bill considered by the House today chooses to cut vital services, such as Meals on Wheels, Medicaid for seniors in nursing homes and low income children, and nutrition programs, instead of choosing to allow tax breaks for millionaires to expire. That's just not right. We should not balance our budget on the backs of our most vulnerable when we have yet to ask those that benefited the most from tax breaks and bailouts to contribute."
