Gov. Perdue issued a statement today welcoming President Obama to North Carolina and applauding his focus on making college affordable for working families.
"President Obama is working tirelessly for better jobs and a stronger middle class. As part of those efforts, he is focused on making college more affordable for all Americans. I applaud the President's efforts to persuade Congress to act on student loan interest rates before they double in July. As higher education costs continue to rise, elected leaders at every level must take action.
In North Carolina, we have made innovative investments in higher education with programs like Career & College Promise, which helps high school students get college credit or receive career training at no cost to the student before they graduate. And yesterday I announced that I will include an additional $35 million in my proposed budget to ensure that working families across the state can afford to send their children to one of our outstanding public universities.
Education is essential to the health of our economy -- I join President Obama in urging all our elected leaders to support working families by investing in our future."
