Goodlatte Receives American Farm Bureau Federation's Golden Plow Award

Press Release

Location: Keezletown, VA

Today, Congressman Bob Goodlatte received the Golden Plow award for his continued support of America's farmers and ranchers. The Golden Plow award is the highest honor bestowed on Members of Congress by the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF). Congressman Goodlatte was presented the award during a ceremony at Twin Oaks Farm by AFBF President Bob Stallman and Virginia Farm Bureau President Wayne Pryor.

"I am honored to receive the Golden Plow award," said Congressman Goodlatte. "The agriculture industry has a significant impact on America's economy and is at the center of many communities throughout the nation -- including the Sixth District. Farming and ranching are essential to our prosperity."

Congressman Goodlatte is a member of the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture where he currently serves as Vice Chairman. In addition, he is a member of the Subcommittee on Conservation, Energy and Forestry as well as the Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry. Congressman Goodlatte has served the Agriculture Committee in a variety of leadership roles including Chairman of the Subcommittee on Department Operations, Oversight, Nutrition and Forestry (1997-2003), Chairman of the Agriculture Committee (2003-2007), and Ranking Member of the Agriculture Committee (2007-2008), and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Conservation, Credit, Energy and Research (2009-2010).

"America's farmers and ranchers have long produced the safest and most abundant food and fiber in the world," said Congressman Goodlatte. "However, thanks to increased federal regulations, farmers are facing even greater challenges in today's environment. It is important to ensure that American agriculture can continue to meet the growing needs of our nation. I will continue to work diligently to protect American agriculture and promote policies that will advance rural America."

According to the AFBF, the objectives of the Golden Plow award are to identify, select and award those members of Congress, regardless of their party affiliation, whose philosophies or records demonstrate their commitment to the private enterprise system; sound agricultural policies supported by Farm Bureau; fiscal conservatism; and reduced federal regulations on businesses and individuals. Congressman Goodlatte is only the second Virginian to receive this award.
