Issues: Immigration

1st Vice Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Congressman Rubén Hinojosa joined other members of the CHC, Dream Act activists and young Latino voters on Capitol Hill to denounce a Dream Act proposal by Republican Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

"When a Republican bill such as the "Rubio Plan" tries to disguise itself as the Dream Act, it is a slap in the face to anyone and everyone who has any compassion or any sense", said U.S. Rep. Hinojosa.

The original federal Dream Act approved by a bipartisan vote in the House of Representatives, was designed to allow undocumented youth who were brought here as children a path to citizenship, provided they either served in the military or attended college. Some say, including news reports, the "Rubio Plan" offers these youth only a non-immigrant visa.

Congressman Hinojosa added, "How can you expect to have some of the brightest and best of our country serve in our military, become doctors, teachers, and engineers and then say to them thank you for all you are doing for your country, but we are sorry, you cannot become a U.S. Citizen! It simply baffles the mind of anyone who knows right from wrong. DREAM Act students should not and must not be prevented from a path to U.S. citizenship!"

If the "Rubio Plan" is presented, it would be the first time in modern history that someone has proposed a law that would permanently prohibit citizenship to one segment of American society.

"The U.S. House of Representatives, including my vote, has already approved the TRUE bipartisan DREAM Act, it is time that our Senators do the same because it is the right thing to do," said U.S. Rep. Hinojosa.
