Stearn Votes with House to Approve the Sportsmen's Heritage

Press Release

Date: April 17, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

"The federal government owns nearly 650 million acres of land, or 30 percent of the land area in the United States," said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Sixth). "The federal government manages these resources for the benefit of the American people and for future generations. Recreational access to some of these land and water resources is an important part of managing these treasures for the public good, and it strengthens the public commitment to preserving these resources. I'm proud to join in approving H.R. 4089, the Sportsmen's Heritage Act of 2012."

The House today approved H.R. 4089, which supports access for hunting and fishing on public lands; protects against unnecessary closure of public lands to recreational shooting; protects the use of traditional ammunition and fishing tackle; and eliminates government red tape for the importation of specific, legal hunting trophies. It further provides for limiting this access for reasons of resource conservation, public safety, and national security. In addition, it does not give priority to hunting, fishing, and recreational shooting over other uses.
