Teen Heroin Use

Statement

Date: April 10, 2012

Heroin is typically a drug associated with rock stars or big cities, but sadly, it's becoming increasingly common among adolescents and teenagers in our communities because it's cheap and accessible. In fact, heroin use has claimed the lives of seven young people in our area over the past year. One drug-related death is one too many. It's a heart-breaking tragedy that no one should have to experience in his or her own family.

This week, I had the opportunity to attend two drug education forums hosted by School Districts 203 and 204 and the Aurora and Naperville Police Departments. In attendance were police officers, drug counselors, teachers and hundreds of families. I applaud them for tackling this problem head-on and refusing to look the other way. Effective education and prevention is the most important weapon we have to keep our kids safe.
