Stivers Introduces Bipartisan TRICARE for Kids Bill

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Steve Stivers (R -- Columbus) today introduced TRICARE for Kids, a bipartisan bill that works to better shape the policies and practices of TRICARE military benefits to account for the needs of children. Stivers introduced the bill with Representative Bobby Schilling (R-IL) and Representative Susan Davis (D-CA).

"The dedication and sacrifices that our military and their families make are the reasons why we are able to enjoy an unparalleled level of freedom in this country," Stivers said. "We owe them a great debt of gratitude, and this bill is one way we can show our military families our appreciation."

Through its TRICARE program--the military health care system covering 9.6 million lives including military retirees, active duty military and their families--the Department of Defense has recognized the health care support that military families need back home. TRICARE for Kids works to assist the department in its efforts to develop and encourage health care practices designed to address the specific health care needs of military children.

The bill accomplishes this through a working group convened by the Secretary of Defense. The working group will be comprised of a full spectrum of experts on children's health care and military families, and it will comprehensively review TRICARE health care policies and practices to make recommendations that specifically account for children's health care and pediatric care settings.

TRICARE for Kids is endorsed by the Military Officers Association of America, Children's Hospital Association, the American Hospital Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Military Family Association.

A career soldier, Stivers has served over 26 years in the Ohio Army National Guard and holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He served the United States overseas during Operation Iraqi Freedom in Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar and Djibouti.
