Baca Statement on Misguided GOP Budget Proposal

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Joe Baca (D-Rialto) released the following statement on Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan's budget proposal for fiscal year 2013:

"It seems that history is repeating itself: House Republicans are once again offering up a budget plan to end Medicare as we know it, give tax breaks to billionaires and Big Oil, and destroy American jobs. The Republican budget proposal is bad for America's seniors, the middle class, and working families - and fails to live up to our American values of fairness and opportunity for all."

"Chairman Ryan's budget proposal ends the Medicare guarantee, replacing it with an ineffective system of private sector subsidies. It would substitute the current Medicaid system for a block grant program, undermining the health and well being of millions of struggling children and families. And it would replace SNAP with another block grant system, taking food off the table for working families across the nation."

"The American people want to preserve and strengthen Medicare, not dismantle it. They are counting on action to help create jobs and grow our economy, instead of delivering an average tax cut of $150,000 to the wealthiest Americans while safeguarding tax breaks for Big Oil and special interests."

"We must work to responsibly lower the deficit with intelligent spending cuts, but it is morally reprehensible to balance the budget on the backs of our seniors and struggling working class families. Democrats are fighting to reignite the American Dream, and will continue to work for a bipartisan budget proposal that strengthens our economy and ensures America remains a nation of equal opportunity for all."
