Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after House Republican leaders announced they would pull their short-term transportation extension from floor consideration:
"Passing a temporary extension does nothing more than kick the can down the road when our economy and families can least afford it; and enacting the partisan, long-term Republican bill would be worse -- destroying half-a-million jobs and undermining highway investments in nearly every state. The Republican short-term approach only prolongs uncertainty for the construction industry, for state and local governments, for commuters and businesses nationwide.
"Transportation has long been an area of bipartisan cooperation, and we were proud to see the Senate act in that tradition to pass a bill that saves and creates more than two million jobs and puts construction workers back to work across the country. Now, it's time for House Republicans to follow suit -- to abandon their "my way or no highway' agenda once and for all, and work with Democrats to pass the bipartisan Senate transportation bill, create jobs, strengthen our economy and our middle class, and rebuild America."
