Statement on International Women's Day

Statement

Date: March 9, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa released the following statement today to mark International Women's Day:

"On International Women's Day we celebrate the determination of women around the world to fight for equal rights and the opportunity to have their voices heard.

"It may be easy now to overlook the strength and determination it took for women to achieve equality in our nation, but the struggle was real and the stakes were high. Even today, I am proud to be a part of an ongoing effort to build on our past successes, including encouraging women to seek elected office and work to represent not only the interests of women, but the interests of all Americans. It is imperative that women have equal access to educational opportunities and provide leadership in the boardroom, in the halls of Congress, in their schools, homes and communities.

"I consider it an obligation and an honor to advocate for respect, opportunities, and equal treatment for women, including preserving their rights to healthcare and reproductive freedom. I hope to use my position to inspire the next generation of women leaders to continue these efforts. Today we celebrate the accomplishments women have made thus far, and acknowledge the work we have left to do. Together we can inspire, uplift, and empower women to raise their voices and work towards equality worldwide."
