Issue Position: The Reagan Doctrine, Peace through Strength

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

Gary Glenn enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves during the Persian Gulf War buildup in 1990 and served eight years in the Reserves and Army National Guard. He was named "honor graduate" of both basic and advanced individual training, completed platoon leader development training, won two Army Achievement Medals, and was rated an "expert" marksman. He served in various capacities, from traveling with the Adjutant General to cover the general's activities for the Guard newspaper to driving a fuel tanker and serving on a ground support team for Apache attack helicopters. Gary's father was a U.S. Marine who survived the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, and Gary serves as chairman of the state affiliate of a military readiness and remembrance non-profit organization, the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors.

Debbie Stabenow -- one of America's most liberal senators -- ignored the strong counsel of the Army and Marine members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, voting to subject our service men and women to social experimentation and a political agenda that threatens not only military readiness but the morals and morale of American troops who've volunteered to put their lives on the line to safeguard our security and freedom.

Once elected -- having worn our country's uniform himself, and having been raised by a World War II Marine -- Senator Gary Glenn will support the men and women of our armed forces and champion the Reagan Doctrine of "Peace through Strength." He will vote to restore the federal law prohibiting openly immoral behavior in the ranks of military personnel, which threatens to undermine unit cohesion and military readiness. He will urge compliance with the Constitutional requirement that Congress make a formal Declaration of War before committing American troops to military action in foreign lands. In any such case, he will support giving our troops a clear military objective, untie their hands in achieving that objective, oppose the imposition of politically correct "rules of engagement" that put the lives of our troops at even greater risk, and once that military objective has been achieved, bring our troops and treasure home.
