Health Care Law Provides Positive Benefits for Fifth District Families, Seniors & Small Businesses

Location: Unknown

This Friday marks two years since President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law. Since then, millions of Americans have seen the positive impacts of health care reform, and here in Maryland's Fifth District, families and small businesses are benefitting from new protections and greater freedom and control over their health care choices, including:

7,500 young adults under 26 and previously uninsured in the district now have health insurance.
3,900 seniors in the district received prescription drug discounts worth $2.4 million, an average discount of $620 per senior.
63,000 seniors in the district received Medicare preventive services without paying any co-pays, coinsurance, or deductibles.
46,000 children and 170,000 adults in the district now have private health insurance that covers preventive services without paying any co-pays, coinsurance, or deductibles.
410 small businesses in the district received tax credits to help maintain or expand health care coverage for their employees.
10,000 to 44,000 children in the district with preexisting health conditions can no longer be denied coverage by health insurers.
Two years later, Maryland families have new patient protections and greater access to quality, affordable health care. But if Republicans had their way, they would take away these new benefits by repealing the law and component pieces. Democrats believe that we cannot go back to the days when insurance companies were in charge, and we will continue to stand by the Affordable Care Act and the protections it provides Americans.
