Leland Fire/Rescue will receive a $1 million federal grant to help purchase communications equipment, protective gear and training, according to a news release from U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C.
In addition, the Bald Head Island Department of Public Safety will receive $49,526 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.
"During a time when communities across the state are struggling with limited budgets, this grant will help ensure that our brave firefighters and first responders have the tools and resources they need to protect our families and stay safe on the job," Hagan said in a prepared statement.
John Grimes, chief of the Leland Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department, said response to emergencies will be improved when the department moves to the new communications system, which is compatible with other emergency services agencies.
