Barrow Leads Effort to Protect Consumer Privacy, Online Safety

Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) sent a letter last week to Chairman Mary Bono Mack and Chairman G.K. Butterfield of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade asking for Google to testify at the subcommittee's upcoming hearing on online privacy issues.

"Technological advances and online innovations have made all of our lives easier in many ways," wrote Barrow. "But with those new opportunities come new challenges. It is important that we not allow these innovations to trump personal privacy."

This letter follows an avalanche of consumer complaints in the wake of Google's March 1st service term changes, and the recent Google, Safari privacy breach which sparked concerns throughout the country. Congressman Barrow serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and is also a member of the Bipartisan Privacy Caucus, a bipartisan group of members of Congress dedicated to protecting citizens' confidential information in the face of new challenges posed by the information age.
