Reid: Senate Votes to Extend PILT, Secure Rural Schools Funding for Nevada

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced that the Senate has passed, 82-16, an amendment that extends Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) funding through FY 2013 and Secure Rural Schools (SRS) funding through FY 2012. Under the amendment, Nevada counties would receive roughly $23 million in PILT funding and an estimated $4.4 million in SRS funding. The amendment was based on a bipartisan bill that Reid originally co-sponsored last September.

"Nevada counties would take a big hit without PILT and SRS funding," Reid said. "Rural areas depend on this funding for schools and services that affect the vast majority of county residents. For years I've worked hard to ensure that Nevada receives its fair share of funding under these programs and I am pleased that the Senate has voted to continue providing the resources needed to help pay for essential services around our state."

The amendment is based on bipartisan legislation (S. 1692, the County Payments Reauthorization Act) that Reid co-sponsored last year. PILT expires in September 2012 and the amendment extends it through September 2013. SRS expired in September 2011, and the amendment extends it through September 2012.

Under the agreement Reid led in 2008, Nevada's SRS county payments rose from $407,000 in Fiscal Year 2007 to $4.5 million in FY 2011, and its PILT payments went from $13.8 million to nearly $23 million.
