Owens Statement on TransCanada Plans to Begin Keystone Construction

Statement

Date: Feb. 28, 2012
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Oil and Gas

Congressman Owens released the following statement in response to TransCanada's announcement of plans to start building the southern portion of the Keystone XL pipeline and resubmit its cross-border application.

"This is a good first step toward a project that will create jobs and enhance our reliance on our trusted allies in Canada for our energy needs," Owens said. "Conflict and demand overseas are driving up prices at the pump for commuters, farmers and families, and projects like this have the potential to bring some relief. Clearly the oil companies are selling the excess gas supply to the highest bidder and not protecting the American economy. The nation needs an all-of-the-above approach to energy security, and the Keystone pipeline is a move in the right direction.

"The Keystone XL pipeline will ensure that we refine more oil from Canada, where it will travel a short distance with less opportunity for disruption. As TransCanada prepares to resubmit the project for presidential approval, I urge the White House to realize just how important this is and approve the plan."
