Rep. Becerra: Women Have Changed the Course of History

Statement

Date: March 1, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

"Hello, I'm Congressman Xavier Becerra

"This month is Women's History Month, a time to recognize America's leaders and honor their many contributions which enrich us all today.

"Make no mistake about it. Women have changed the course of history.

"From Abigail Adams, the second woman to serve as First Lady of the United States, who was better known as 'Mrs. President' for her unshakable efforts to put our nation on the right path. To Sandra Day O'Connor, the first female member of the United States Supreme Court; Nancy Pelosi, the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives; and Ann Dunwoody, the first female to serve as a four-star General in the United States military.

"From Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose first novel Uncle Tom's Cabin was a literary force in the abolitionist movement to end slavery. To Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman elected to Congress. And someday soon, I have no doubt another fearless and tireless pioneer will be elected the first female President of the United States.

"From gaining the right to vote to breaking glass ceilings in corporate America, women in our country have and continue to overcome every obstacle placed in their path.

"Women in America still face many challenges. But thanks to all of those fearless leaders who have come before us and those who fight on today, the United States is the great nation we love today.

"To all our women leaders, I say thank you."
