U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement today on the recent merger between al-Shabab and al-Qaeda, two Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) operating in Africa:
"Islamist extremism is a threat wherever it lurks. This union of two Foreign Terrorist Organizations operating in Africa is cause for great concern, and is an important reminder that Islamist extremist groups are actively recruiting followers and expanding their operations across the African continent.
"I applaud our regional partners in Africa for their constant vigilance and efforts to combat extremism. Responsible nations must always be on guard as Islamist extremist groups seeking to extend their global reach."
