Issue Position: Fiscal Responsibility

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

Hector Balderas is tired of Washington politicians using "fiscal responsibility" as a wedge issue and an excuse to deny education to our children and protection for our seniors. Fiscal accountability is not a Republican phrase. It is a progressive principle that means holding government and corporations accountable so that we can focus our resources on the programs that will move us forward as a nation.

Growing up in one of the poorest villages in New Mexico, Hector learned at an early age about the discipline required to make and maintain a sound budget, whether it's for a family, a state, or the federal government. But he also understands how crucial it is that government support the people who need its help the most. Hector believes the only way we can get our economy back on track is to restore actual fiscal accountability to Washington.

As State Auditor, Hector has worked to crack down on waste, fraud and abuse in state and local government, and went after corporations that defrauded taxpayers. He'll bring that same approach to Washington as United States Senator.

As Senator, Hector will:

Work to crack down on waste, fraud and abuse in government;
Push for a balanced approach to deficit reduction -- one that includes smart spending cuts, as well as tax increases on the wealthiest Americans and largest corporations;
Fight to eliminate the Bush tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires.

Make no mistake, we need to get our fiscal house in order. But Hector knows that we cannot balance our checkbook on the backs of New Mexico's--and America's--most vulnerable citizens.

As Senator, Hector will fight for fiscal accountability so we have the resources necessary to create jobs. A smarter budget can get our economy moving again. We must invest in infrastructure, in education and in innovation. We must invest in green energy, which creates jobs, weans us off of foreign oil and helps our environment all at the same time. New Mexico, in particular, is rife with opportunities for exactly this sort of investment.
