Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) today released a statement following Senate action to protect middle class families from a looming tax hike by passing the payroll tax holiday by a vote of 60 to 36.
"This fight shouldn't have taken nearly this long or been this cynical. We've got working families that count on this extra money to fill up the gas tank, put food on the table, or heat their home," said Sen. Kerry. " This should have been a no-brainer from the start but we're living in a moment of politics where even the easy and obvious is contentious. Fortunately in getting something done we also averted almost a 30 percent cut to doctors that was coming at us like a freight train on March 1st. I still have real concerns about the impact cuts to hospitals, clinical laboratories, and preventative care will have on the quality health care we're able to provide in Massachusetts. Every Medicare expert knows that the sustainable growth rate formula is irreparably flawed, and I'll continue to fight in the Senate to do something much more sensible and realistic."
