Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) today called for Senator Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to join the House of Representatives and allow a vote on legislation granting the president line-item veto authority.
Johanns is a sponsor of the Deficit Reduction and Budget Reform Act, S. 439, which cuts spending and reforms the nation's budget process. The legislation also gives the President line-item veto authority.
"I have always supported giving the President, regardless of party, line-item veto authority, and I believe this authority is even more important as our debt has surpassed $15 trillion," Johanns said. "While Congress has imposed an earmark moratorium as an effort to stop runaway spending, it's barely a drop in the ocean of red ink our country is facing. I will do everything I can to eliminate wasteful spending, and I strongly support giving the President of the United States the ability to join me in this fight through the line-item veto."
The House's line-item veto legislation was introduced by Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Ranking Member Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.). It passed the House this afternoon by a vote of 254-173.
