Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 243,000 jobs in January, dropping the unemployment rate to 8.3 percent. This report marks 23 consecutive months of private sector job growth.
"Today's promising job numbers are another indicator that the economy continues to move in the right direction. However, the unemployment rate is still unacceptably high. Congress must build on this progress and work to pass legislation that truly creates jobs. This is a crucial point in our economic recovery, and the American people can't afford to wait around for Congress to finally get serious about job creation.
"Congress should also be working to ensure that hard working Americans keep more of their hard earned money. Congress shouldn't waste any more time and should immediately pass an extension of the payroll tax cut. Not only would this put more money back in the pockets of 160 million Americans, but it would help stimulate the economy."
