Statement: Congresswoman Jackie Speier Responds To Komen Reversal

Statement

Date: Feb. 3, 2012
Location: San Mateo, CA

Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Mateo/San Francisco) made the following statement in response to Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure's announcement that the foundation would continue to fund breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood health clinics:

"I am pleased to see that the Komen foundation responded to public calls to reverse their decision on Planned Parenthood. I don't think Komen knew what they were up against when they decided to cut funding for breast cancer screening at the health centers that provide care to low income and uninsured women across the country. With the help of the internet, millions of advocates for women's health and breast cancer prevention were able to voice their opposition to Komen's politically charged decision.

The incident behooves all of us to ensure that politics does not interfere with efforts to research, prevent, or detect cancer or other deadly diseases."
