With more than two-thirds majority voting in support, the U.S. House of Representatives voted today to pass H.R. 3835, sponsored by Representative Sean Duffy (R-WI). This legislation would extend the pay freeze of Members of Congress and non-military Federal employees through 2013. Upon passage of the legislation, Representative Duffy issued the following statement:
"Millions of families across the country have been forced to tighten their belts during these tough economic times, and our federal government must do the same. Hard earned taxpayer dollars should not go to pay raises for federal workers who earn 16 percent higher than their counterparts in the private-sector.
"While Congress asks the rest of the government to cut costs, it's important that we ask the same of ourselves. That is why I included a pay freeze on congressional salaries as well. I was sent here by the voters of the seventh district of Wisconsin to make the difficult choices necessary to get our country back on track and spend taxpayer money properly. Today we took another strong step toward achieving that goal. I'm incredibly proud of this bipartisan effort."
