Location: Detroit, MI

Congressman Hansen Clarke (MI-13) released the following statement on President Obama's State of the Union address:

"This speech was a victory for Michigan, Metro Detroit, and U.S. manufacturing. The President's speech promoted U.S. manufacturing and the importance of Detroit in creating jobs for the entire country. My goal this past year was to change the City's image to a region that is a great investment opportunity to create jobs. I am leveraging the value that Detroit has on our national economy by requesting emergency assistance to the City to avoid the City's impending financial collapse. Tonight after the speech, I spoke with several cabinet secretaries and to the President's top economic advisor on the need for increased federal aid. They all were receptive," said Rep. Hansen Clarke.

"The President is moving in the right direction when he proposed capping interest rate increases on student loans. I will soon introduce legislation that will comprehensively reform how federal student loans are repaid."
