Chairwoman Stabenow Applauds Forest Service Public Access Decision

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, Chairwoman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, today applauded a decision by the U.S. Forest Service that will preserve hunting and snowmobiling in the Huron-Manistee National Forests. The decision follows a U.S. Court of Appeals ruling that required the U.S. Forest Service to revise its Land Management Plan, potentially jeopardizing public access to parts of the forest. The plan would have included a possible ban on hunting and snowmobiling in portions of the forests. Senator Stabenow sent a letter to the Forest Supervisor last year urging him to maintain public access for hunting and snowmobiling.

"With nearly one million acres of woodlands, lakes, and streams, the Huron-Manistee National Forests offer millions of visitors unparalleled recreational opportunities like hunting and snowmobiling. These activities are not only a part of our way of life, but they are also critical to Michigan's economy. I am glad Michigan families and tourists will continue to enjoy these beautiful public lands."

As Chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, Senator Stabenow has oversight of the U.S. Forest Service.
