Congressman John Sarbanes was joined by Department of Education Undersecretary Martha Kanter today in announcing the "Employer Certification for Public Service Loan Forgiveness," a new form that will allow those working in public service better determine their eligibility for loan forgiveness. Sarbanes, Kanter, and University of Maryland officials hosted a panel discussion for students on a path to public service careers.
"Education is the key to re-igniting the American dream," said Congressman John Sarbanes, author of the Education for Public Service Act, which provides loan forgiveness for individuals who follow public service careers. "I view the federal student loan program as a powerful mechanism to make college affordable for all Americans. We should do everything we can to keep interest rates low, provide reduced monthly payments and target loan forgiveness after graduation."
The new Student Debt Repayment Assistant will help current borrowers with both federal and private student loans, as well as those about to enter repayment, better understand their options.
