Our defense spending is equal to the combined defense spending of the rest of the world. There is no necessity for this level of spending. The large combat divisions need to be reduced to smaller, more mobile anti-terrorist forces which can be projected into areas essential to national security by air and naval forces.
The US must disengage from the involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq, and reduce our involvement in Europe by removing our troops from there. The realignment of US strategy globally should focus on HUMINT and SIGINT emphasis applied to the terrorist threat and Asia.
Veteran benefits in the areas of education and reemployment should be strengthened for returning veterans. Based on the level of defense spending, there should be ongoing auditing of defense spending. We need to heed President Eisenhower's admonition concerning the "military industrial complex" and eliminate the outsourcing of the defense of the nation.
